My three year old daughter requested a kitten for her birthday and I felt good about going the shelter to rescue a kitten. However, when my daughter led me to her room one day and pointed out a "present" left by kitty, she exclaimed as only a three year old can, "toilet train cat," while giving me her sternest look. I was especially disappointed because I had already introduced kitty to the litter box and realized that I needed some advice from the vet on how to litter train a kitten. What I found out was cat toilet training measures that new cat owners can take that solves the problem quickly. Are you looking for some good information for litter training your own cat? Then the following information that helped me can now help you.

Unscented litter

The advice I was given was to purchase a litter box that was deep, and that I should be using fine grade litter. Most cats and kittens will prefer the fine grade litter over the coarse clay litter. You will also not want to use the scented varieties because cats generally don't like it. You will want to find a location that is secluded for the kitty litter box and remember not to place the box near their food and water source. The secluded area will appeal more to the kitten, and the food and water will not be fouled by the kick back from the litter box. You should also consider purchasing a plastic under liner that extends 6 inches around the litter box for easy clean up of litter that is kicked out of the box. Yet another way to avoid unwanted messes is to place a scratch mat at the front of the litter box for the cats to clean their paws.

Toilet training

Luckily, most cats will instinctively want to use a kitty litter box. Once you have the litter box placed in a secluded area, introduce the kitten to the litter box. With any luck the cat will take to the litter box immediately and the cat will be trained. On the other hand you're most likely going to have to train the kitten a little bit more. Regular trips to the litter box, especially after meals and when they begin to show signs that they need to use the potty, will get the kitten used to the litter box. The best method of training comes from praise that is given when the kitten successfully uses the kitty litter box.

Cleaning up "presents"

A very clear sign the cat is ready to do their "business," is when they scratch at the floor like a litter box. Hopefully you will be quick enough to get the kitten to the litter box. Cats will sometimes stray from the litter box if it becomes full, so you will need to keep it clean with fresh litter if you expect the cat to continue to use it. When you do have a mess to clean up, it is critical that the area that was soiled be thoroughly cleaned and deodorized.

Anybody can learn how to litter train a kitten. And most cat toilet training is reasonably easy to do. Most of all I'm not going to miss my three year old declaring that I "toilet train cat" anymore.
